Career Interest and Newswriting Experience
My newswriting experience has helped me grow both personally and professionally as a creative and media professional. Through my role as an Associate Editor for the Tulsa Community College newspaper and my experience as a contributing writer for DBQ Magazine, I have developed stronger communication, research, and storytelling skills. Writing articles and covering stories taught me the importance of accuracy, clarity, and presenting information in a way that connects with readers. I also gained confidence in interviewing, editing, and multimedia content creation.
One of the biggest strengths I gained from this experience was adaptability. Newswriting often requires quick thinking, meeting deadlines, and adjusting to unexpected challenges. Sometimes I struggled with organizing large amounts of information or finding the best angle for a story, but I learned to respond by conducting deeper research, asking questions, and revising my work carefully. This process strengthened my patience and attention to detail.
What I enjoyed most about newswriting was the opportunity to tell stories that matter to people and give visibility to voices that are often overlooked. I was especially drawn to topics connected to community, culture, and the arts because they reflect many of my own experiences and interests. My work in journalism also inspired me to learn more about multimedia storytelling, digital media, and how journalism can influence culture and public awareness.
This experience gave me a new perspective on the responsibility that comes with being a media professional. I learned that writing is not only about sharing information, but also about building understanding and connection. My background in music, acting, modeling, and community engagement all connect to storytelling, which is why newswriting feels meaningful to me.
In the future, I plan to apply these skills to my broader career goals in entertainment and media. Newswriting helped me discover that my voice, creativity, and perspective can positively impact others while helping me grow into a more confident and well-rounded professional.
